No matter how hard you try with your marketing (and that includes social media) there are big players out there who can stop you in your tracks. Big players like Microsoft and Google who both did large security updates before Christmas 2024.
Sometimes being stopped in your tracks means you have to go way outside your comfort zone and learn something new. And, while that can take a lot time out of your day, it's NEVER a bad thing it.
For me this week it was learning how to navigate and set up the connections between SPF and DKIM records on Google and my website. And it wasn't an easy task. (Once you know what you're doing of course it is..but getting there was a process.)
Learning new things takes time, and this took several hours and several calls to the states and IT teams within Google to find out what to connect to what. Now it's done my email should be connecting.
And why, you might wonder, was I having to do that? Did you know that these security upgrades that Microsoft and Google both did have been impacting thousands of businesses and causing issues with email delivery?
I started noticing it this month when clients just weren't getting my emails. I'd send them and they hadn't got them, or they were telling me the emails had gone into spam. I was starting to think I'd gone a little crazy. Perhaps I'd not sent the emails and just thought I'd done it?? But..then I read several posts where other businesses were having the same issue..so.. not going mad after all!
Checking you email connections isn't something we do regularly, unless we are using mailers like Mailchimp or Active Campaign which alert us to problems.
So, if you haven't heard from people you were expecting to, then call them or send them a message on social media and check. You may find that your emails aren't going where you want them to and you'll need to update your settings.
I've been in marketing for 30+ years now and it's really all about being connected and checking that your connections work. If they don't you may find your marketing is falling on deaf ears..or no ears at all.
